“I feel like parts of my body are flawed.”
“I find myself consumed by thoughts about my physical appearance.”
“Thinking about my body makes it challenging to be present in personal and professional life.”
Body dysmorphia is rooted in the idea that your body is flawed. This idea is often developed in early life experiences and reinforced by family, peers, social groups, and societal messages. It can leave you feeling like your body needs to be fixed or changed, which can be an overwhelming and exhausting experience. Through the cycle of negative self-talk and disembodiment, body dysmorphia can make you feel like you are in a continual fight with your body.
Our clinicians understand the complexities associated with the connection between mind and body. We acknowledge the impact that feeling shame around your body can have on your mental health and wellbeing. Through exploring the origins of shame around your body, we can work together to heal and move toward a state of compassionate, body-acceptance.
We can support you if you’re experiencing any of the following signs of body dysmorphia:
Avoiding social situations due to body related shame
Beliefs that your body needs to be fixed or changed
Engaging in behaviors in attempt to reduce or minimize perceived flaws
Feeling a lack of control in relation to behaviors related to physical appearance, such as mirror checking
Feeling a sense of perfectionism in relation to your body
Frequently comparing your physical appearance with others
Preoccupation with perceived flaw in appearance
