“I can’t control my thoughts or my emotions.”

“I can’t reach my goals.”

“I don’t know how to move forward.”

Cognitive behavioral therapy is a form of talk therapy that processes how our thoughts and emotions impact our behaviors. This type of therapy aims to identify unhelpful or distorted ways of thinking that lead to negative outcomes so that we can change how we think, impacting how we take action in our lives.

CBT is also the foundation for many other therapy modalities such as cognitive processing therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, rational emotive behavioral therapy, and schema-focused therapy. There are other specialized forms of CBT, like trauma-focused CBT and CBT for psychosis.

CBT can help people with conditions such as:

  • ADHD

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Eating disorders

  • Grief

  • Life transitions

  • Medical conditions

  • PTSD

  • Stress and coping
