“I know this behavior threatens my well-being, but I don’t know how to stop.”

“I don’t feel alive unless I’m taking risks.”

“My loved ones have expressed concern over my ‘risky behavior.’”

Risky behavior covers a fairly broad spectrum, but any behavior that can cause harm to an individual or those around them may fall into this categorization. Sex addiction, internet addiction, and video game addiction are similar may cause negative health affects, while shop-lifting and fighting stands in direct contradiction to federal and national laws. The National Institute of Health (NIH) mentions that risky behavior addictions include “Acts that increase the risk of disease or injury, which can subsequently lead to disability, death or social problems”.

Common treatments include modalities such as CBT, which specifically focuses on rationalizing the thoughts that are associated with behaviors, and helping redirect thoughts from engaging in negative self-talk and/or rumination. CBT in collaboration with motivational interviewing (MI) can aid those struggling with a behavior addiction to see the purpose in changing and becoming motivated to do so if they are not already.

If you believe you may be experiencing a risky behavioral addiction in your life, please do not hesitate to reach out so that you may be connected with a mental health clinician. There are so many benefits for individuals receiving talk therapy to understand the root causes that have led them onto the path they are on today. When it comes to addiction, and specifically risky behavioral addictions, talk therapy can be freeing, empowering and promote healing in individuals that they did not know was possible.
