“I feel constant tension in my muscles when I am stressed.”
“The thought of being more connected to my body scares me.”
“I can’t trust my feelings or the sensations in my body.”
When a painful event is experienced, our bodies will do whatever they can to protect us. They will also remember and store what has happened to us in various nodes throughout the body. Painful memories, stress, and pain can find their way into our bodies through stiffness, tension, or disembodiment. When these forces go unchecked, we may become alienated from our own experience, and in turn, feel less connected to others.
By using somatic therapy, we can turn inward to identify where our bodies have been storing this pain and lovingly reintegrate it into our experience. Let us treat our bodies with the kindness, care, and respect they deserve. You have the power to reclaim your body and the sensations that come with it. Together, you and a practitioner will develop body awareness, and resource safety, and occasionally participate in naturalistic movements to strengthen the bond between you and your experience.
Therapists have used somatic therapy in treatment with variety of conditions, including but not limited to:
Anxiety
Complicated grief
Depression
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Self-esteem problems
Sleep issues
Trust and intimacy issues
